چکیده

freshwater microalgae and other plant-like organisms. They are used in the production of pharmaceuticals, diet supplements, pigments, and biofuels, and also used as feeds in aquaculture. Phytoplankton are cultured to feed bivalve molluscs (all life stages), the early larval stages of crustaceans, and the zooplankton (e.g., rotifers, copepods) that are used as live food in fish hatcheries. Flagellates and diatoms are two important types of phytoplankton at the base of the food chain. They manufacture cellular components through the process of photosynthesis, taking up carbon dioxide and nutrients from the water and using light as an energy source. The microalgae used as feed in hatcheries vary in size, environmental requirements, growth rate, and nutritional value (Fig. 1, Tables 1 and 2) (Helm et al., 2004). When selecting a species for culture, it is important to take all of these parameters into consideration. Most hatcheries grow a variety of species that serve different needs throughout the production cycle with respect to size,

Impact of Climate Change on Fisheries and Aquaculture Activities in Southern Iraq

The impacts on aquaculture and fisheries sectors from climate change in the southern part of Iraq will likely to be both positive and negative arising from direct and indirect impacts on natural resources. The main elements of climate change that could potentially impact fisheries and aquaculture activities in Iraq are temperature, rain patterns, shortage of freshwater, circulation, upwelling, ...

Probiotic bacteria as biological control agents in aquaculture.

There is an urgent need in aquaculture to develop microbial control strategies, since disease outbreaks are recognized as important constraints to aquaculture production and trade and since the development of antibiotic resistance has become a matter of growing concern. One of the alternatives to antimicrobials in disease control could be the use of probiotic bacteria as microbial control agent...

Phytoplankton Communities of Lentic Periphyton

Periphyton was cultured and its phytoplankton communities were identified based on morphological features. This included 24 genera belonging to the 6 classes. Highest number of genera was found in Bacillariophyceae followed by Cyanophyceae and Chlorophyceae. Whereas a single genus was documented from class Euglenophyceae, Ulvophyceae and Xanthophyceae. Hence, the study is quite handy for the id...

Effects of sumithion on growth and production of phytoplankton and zooplankton in aquaculture ponds

Sumithion is an organophosphorous pesticide widely used to control tiger bug in the fish larval rearing pond. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of sumithion on plankton population abundance in aquaculture pond. The experiment was carried out with three treatments, i.e., ponds with no sumithion (T1), with 1.0 ppm sumithion (T2) and 2.0 ppm sumithion (T3). The water quality p...
